VELscope VX ^® Oral Cancer Screening

Each year, over 50,000 American’s contract oral cancer, and only 60% of these people will live for more than 5 years without treatment. That is why oral cancer is often deemed the “forgotten disease”. It kills more people than brain cancer, testicular cancer and cervical cancer each year, but receives little public attention.

Many people believe that if they simply abstain from alcohol and tobacco they will not be affected by oral cancer. It is true that tobacco and alcohol do contribute to oral cancer. However, about 30% of those diagnosed have no history of alcohol or tobacco usage.

Prevention and early detection are the 2 best way of fighting oral cancer. We perform visual oral cancer screenings, and also offer supplemental adjuncts. The FDA approved VELscope VX offers us an additional examination tool to help us detect oral cancer in its earliest stages using 400 to 460 nanometer light to help detect precancerous and cancerous cell changes.

How is the VELscope examination performed?

The VELscope cancer screening only takes a few minutes. We use the VELscope light attached to a camera. Shining the light inside your mouth we take a series of photos that will be stored in your file for future references.

How does the VELscope VX work?

VELscope VX utilities the principle of Fluorescence Visualization (FV) that allows us to visualize tissue changes. The blue 400 to 460 nanometer light is used to visualize changes that are otherwise invisible to the naked eye. Healthy tissue will fluoresce in a greenish color under the VELscope VX light, while unhealthy areas do not and will show up much darker.
